CHRISTMAS CANTATA
for mezzo-soprano, mixed choir and orchestra
Lyrics by Kārlis Skalbe, Austra Dāle and Elza

2 | Mirdz laukos sniegs tik balts un neaizskarams
Un gaisos liekas eņģ'ļu spārni švīkst.
2 | The sparkling snow-covered fields are so white and pure
And the sound of angel wings seems to fill the air.
Kā sapnī brīnišķā es slīdu lēnām:
Man apkārt baznīcas no zemes aug,
Tām cauri izeju,
Jo dārgāko vēl acis neierauga.
Slowly I glide as if in a wonderful dream,
All around me churches appear,
I pass through them
For the most precious thing of all my eyes have
yet to see.
Tur mēmais stingums vēl,
Un krusta baigums,
Kas dziļā noskumšanā galvu liec.
Es meklēju, kur Kristus dzīvais maigums
Un brīnums top, un uzplaukst svētais zieds.
There is still a mute numbness there,
And the horror of the cross
That bows my head in deep sorrow.
I seek the miracle of the gentle living Christ
And the flowering of his holy bloom.
